Your guide to a memorable first piercing experience

With summer holidays here, now is the perfect time for children to enjoy that first piercing experience and we’re here to give you some helpful pointers on finding the perfect destination and what you need to ask.

Research locally, either online or social media channels for businesses offering a piercing service and try asking friends and family. Personal recommendations can be invaluable.

When you contact businesses, here are a few key questions to ask them:

What age do you pierce from and is there anything special for younger children?
All children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a Parent / Legal Guardian but ages may differ from place to place. Businesses often have added extras such as the Studex Super Brave Kids Certificates and Stickers or maybe even a Studex Teddy Bear to make the experience one to remember.

Do I need to book an appointment?
Summer holidays are normally super busy for piercing, so you don’t want to miss out. Current COVID-19 guidelines also require booking to allow for social distancing.

What system do they use for piercing?
Studex System 75 is designed to be safe, gentle, hygienic and importantly it’s really quiet! With no loud bangs to startle young children, the system is as pain-free as it can be.

Is the jewellery safe?
The key to safe piercing is to know that the jewellery used with Studex systems is pre-sterilised. The piercer does not need to touch the jewellery at any stage so you can be rest assured that the process is totally hygienic.

What selection of jewellery is available and how much does the piercing cost?
All piercing jewellery should be hypoallergenic and compliant with all international standards, including the EU Nickel Directive. Businesses have the option of an extensive range of earrings, from the traditional ball and birthstones to the best-selling Cubic Zirconia’s as well as daisies, butterflies and glitter balls. The choice of earring will then dictate the price as well as the aftercare products. For a first piercing, make it even more special with a Gold piercing. System 75 offers a beautiful selection of 18ct, 14ct and 9ct Yellow and White Gold which present a piece of jewellery for life and a real one-off investment.

What are the most suitable earrings for my child?
It will depend on the age of your child and who is doing the aftercare.  The traditional yellow or white gold balls remain popular as they are easy to clean and rotate as well as bezel settings which are a smooth finish. Some children like to choose their birthstone as a keepsake from their first piercing or are simply attracted to their favourite colour gemstone or design.

What do I need to do to look after the piercing?
All professional piercers should be able to provide comprehensive aftercare advice as part of the service. It is one of the most important parts of the piercing and varies depending on the site of the piercing and also which Aftercare solution you use.

Exclusive to Studex Piercing Partners is Studex ADVANCED Aftercare. With active ingredients to clean, soothe and protect the piercing site, the solution creates the safest environment for new piercings.

The amazing difference with this product is that you halve the aftercare time on ear lobes, from 6 weeks down to 3 weeks.

This makes life so much easier for parents cleaning children’s earrings.
